ORIGINS FAMILY It belongs to the family of Ulmaceae.
GROWTH AREA The tree grows in the central and eastern regions of the United States.
SPECIFIC WEIGHT 600 kg/m³ al 12% C.U.
TECHNOLOGICAL FEATURES Sapwood and heartwood are clearly distinguished.
The sapwood is narrow, grey – light yellowish.
Instead, the heartwood is dark-reddish and darkens on open air.
It is quite heavy and hard, very resistant to the pressure but it has a little resistance to the traction.
It is also quite flexible.
DRYING METHOD The drying process must be carried out very slowly and carefully since this wood has a tendency to degrading through splitting and warping.
When dried it becomes very steady.
MAIN USES AND WORKING Generally, the manufacture of this wood doesn’t present any difficulties.
All the joints with glue, screws and nails are easy to produce and hold well.
It can be polished, sliced and stripped.
It is a decorative wood, considered one of the best European wood in quality, mainly use for furniture and furnishing.
Red elm is required for the production of furniture, seats, interior furnishings, floors, for railway manufacture and sportive articles.
