ORIGINS FAMILY It belongs to the family of Hamamelidaceae.
GROWTH AREA This wood is a common species of the Southeastern United States where it grows biggest and is most abundant in the lower Mississippi Valley.
SPECIFIC WEIGHT 550 kg/m³ at 12% C.U.
TECHNOLOGICAL FEATURES Wide sapwood is whitish to light pink or tan color while the heartwood is gray to reddish brown.
Grain is interlocked, with a very fine, uniform texture.
Good natural luster, this wood has sometimes been called “satin walnut.”
The sapwood is susceptible to insect attack.
DRYING METHOD It should be carefully and slowly dried to avoid splitting.
MAIN USES AND WORKING Generally, this wood is easy to work.
Glues, stains, and finishes well.
Responds moderately well to steam bending.
Sap Gum is used for: Veneer, plywood, general furniture, interior trim, boxes, turned objects and acoustic cabinets.
